1. American Meadows. Their specialty is wildflowers, but you'll also find: grasses, perennials, trees, ferns, books, and more. Online only, no catalog.
2. Annie's Annuals & Perennials. Annie's began by specializing in seed-grown annuals and expanded to include perennials. Unusual plants and old-fashioned cottage garden flowers are featured, as well as many fragrant and native wildflowers.
3. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. Lots of seed varieties you won't find elsewhere. They do some of their own seed collecting and in 2004, boasted over 100 melon varieties alone.
4. Bluestone Perennials. A large selection of reasonably priced perennials. Their online catalog allows you to search by zone, color, soil, height, bloom time, exposure, and plant type.
5. Brent and Becky's Bulbs. Brent and Becky used to run The Daffodil Mart, which they sold to White Flower Farm. They've brought their expertise to this new company, which offers the same excellent selection and quality that made The Daffodil Mart so popular.
6. Burpee Seeds. A favorite among home vegetable gardeners. They mostly carry their own hybrids, but they are dependable.
7. The Cook's Garden. They have always specialized in carrying seeds of great tasting produce with advice on how to prepare it.

4. Seed Savers Exchange (Decorah, IA) Much more than just a garden seed company, Seed Savers Exchange is a nonprofit dedicated to preserving biodiversity in food crops.

How to Get Free Plants for Your Garden

6 hours ago Thespruce.com Show details

1. Visit Construction Sites. Keep an eye out for construction sites with plants that are worth saving that you can transplant: mature shrubs, native species, and perennials are likely suspects.
2. Curb Shop. Once the weather warms up, gardeners get busy dividing and thinning plants. What happens to all those extras? Sometimes they end up at the curb.
3. Grow Plants From Cuttings. Grab a bottle of rooting hormone and try your hand at growing your own plants from cuttings. It's easier than you may think.
4. Host a Plant or Seed Swap. If you and your neighbors have too much of a particular plant or seed, throw a swap party and trade your way to the plants that you need.
5. Divide Existing Plants. Plants like hostas, daylilies, and peonies, among many others, grow to several times their original size after a few years in the ground.
6. Save Seeds. Collect seeds from your favorite self-pollinating plants, and you'll be able to grow them again next year without having to buy another packet of seeds.
7. Take Advantage of Volunteers. If your yard needs the grace and shade that trees provide, search your lawn for volunteers. They may not end up where you want them, but they're easy enough to move.
8. Check the Classifieds. Craigslist, Freecycle, and even your newspaper can be a great source for free plants. Look for offers to start appearing in March (or whenever it warms up in your area).
9. Watch for Catalog Promotions. Find a plant and seed catalog that you haven't ordered from before, and you've got a good shot at getting your first order free (usually up to $25 worth of product).
10. Get on Store Mailing Lists. Lowes and Home Depot both have a garden club, and both chains send out buy-one-get-one-free coupons regularly. Get on the list and wait for those coupons to hit your inbox.
