1. The 39 discoveries of O3a are the result of upgrades to the LIGO and Virgo observatories, enhanced data quality, and a variety of gravitational-wave searches. Recent improvements in instrumentation to reduce noise and increase sensitivity include more powerful lasers, new and improved mirrors, and better control of scattered light. These changes led to an increase in both the frequency and distance ranges for all three detectors, extending our view of the universe. On average between the three detectors, the median range in which we can observe a typical neutron star merger increased by about 63% from O2 to O3a, as shown in Figure 1. Another vital step to the discovery of gravitational-wave sources is refining the raw data from the detectors. This data conditioning process involves calibrating the data, subtracting noise, and removing glitches. First, we calibrate the raw optical power variations from each detector into dimensionless strainin near real-time for initial detections. L...

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an astronomical catalogue?

An astronomical catalogue is a list or tabulation of astronomical objects, typically grouped together because they share a common type, morphology, origin, means of detection, or method of discovery. Astronomical catalogs are usually the result of an astronomical survey of some kind.

What is the new General Catalog (NGC)?

It is based on the General Catalog, published in 1864, which included 2,500 nebulae cataloged by William Herschel and an additional 2,500 cataloged by his son, John Herschel. [>>>] New General Catalog - A classification system that lists over 13,000 deep - sky celestial objects. Abbreviated as NGC.

What information should be included in a star's Source Catalog?

The star number in the specific source catalog specified in the ref_source_cat parameter. The Durchmusterung identification (BD, CD, or CP number), and component identification if there are two or more SAO stars having the same DM number. The Henry Draper Catalog (HD or HDE) Number.

What is the new General Catalogue used for?

New General Catalogue (NGC) The New General Catalog (NGC) is a list of over 13,000 deep-sky celestial objects, such as galaxies, globular clusters and nebulae. It was developed in 1888 by the astronomer J.L.E. Dreyer, and often celestial objects are referred to by their list number, e.g.
